The Bridge opened in Ogbomoso, Nigeria, on 25 September 2026. It was the day Abigail would have turned 18, and a mural of her now greets everyone who comes through the door.
Families started coming on the first working day. Five weeks on, this is where things stand.
Families are already coming
Parents and carers have been bringing their children in since the first day the centre was open for work. The team has started assessments, so each family has a clearer picture of their child’s needs, and practical training for parents and carers in the care that happens at home every day.
The team is working towards running full services in November.
A bigger team
Four new staff have joined, so the permanent team at The Bridge has grown from two people to six.
Rooms made for children
Inside, The Bridge has a sensory room and a play area, with soft mats, building blocks and toys within a child’s reach. Outside, there is a shaded play area under a large tree in the grounds.

Seating for children who need support
We have given four specialist seating chairs to two institutions. A supportive chair lets a child who cannot sit unaided sit upright safely, so they can join in with learning, meals and play.
Links with local hospitals
We are building links with two teaching hospitals in Ogbomoso, to connect families at The Bridge with specialist medical care.
Nearly 60 families at our September outreach
On 29 September, four days after the opening, our medical partners and volunteers held a free outreach. Nearly 60 families received medical reviews, physiotherapy, medicines and food.
It followed our April outreach, where more than 100 children and young people received free medical care.
What November is for
Opening the doors was the start. Keeping The Bridge running takes staff, equipment and reliable day-to-day care. This November we are asking for help to raise US$5,000 for our work in Nigeria, including The Bridge.
OAKonsult is taking part in the New Africa Fund’s Africa Fundraising Incubator. From 1 to 30 November, eligible gifts through our New Africa Fund page will be matched dollar for dollar, up to US$5,000, once we reach the US$500 fundraising minimum.
