Project ME

From Surviving to Living: supporting parent carers to thrive with wellbeing, peer support and practical tools.

Programme Overview

Project ME is OAKonsult’s flagship wellbeing and resilience programme for parent-carers of children and young people with additional needs and disabilities in Bromley.

Inspired by the From Surviving to Living message, the programme helps parent-carers rebuild identity beyond caregiving, strengthen emotional and mental wellbeing, gain confidence and direction, and connect with others who truly understand.

The programme grew from OAKonsult’s Civil Society Roots 3 work, supported by the Mayor of London / GLA, and the wider goal of restoring hope, rebuilding identity and helping families live fully again.

What Project ME Addresses

  • Identity and confidence: life before and after diagnosis, rebuilding self-worth, replacing limiting beliefs and setting achievable goals.
  • Wellbeing and health: emotional wellbeing, rest, movement, nutrition and practical ways to manage stress and burnout.
  • Connection and support: peer relationships, mentoring pathways and community spaces where parent-carers feel seen and understood.
  • Voice and advocacy: parent voice, SEND guidance and confidence to navigate services and resources.
  • Future and community: clarity, direction and routes back into volunteering, learning, work or wider community participation where appropriate.

Delivery Format

Project ME brought together workshops, training, practical sessions, focus groups and therapeutic wellbeing content for BAME parent-carers in Bromley. Support included community connection, parent voice and advocacy training, peer support and mentoring pathways, faith-sensitive encouragement spaces, and guidance on SEND services and resources.

Sessions were free for participants through Civil Society Roots 3 support. Project ME impact notes record improved mental wellbeing, increased confidence and awareness, reduced isolation and stronger resilience among participants.
