Why Children with Disabilities in Nigeria Are Being Left Behind

In a country rich with culture, resilience, and potential, there is a silent crisis affecting millions—children with disabilities in Nigeria are being left behind.

Whether due to inaccessible schools, lack of healthcare, or societal stigma, these children are too often excluded from the fundamental rights many take for granted. At Oakonsult, we believe this is not just a social injustice—it’s a spiritual and moral emergency.

The Reality in Numbers

– 1 in 10 Nigerian children is estimated to live with a disability.
– Yet less than 10% of children with disabilities in Nigeria attend school.
– Over 90% of children with disabilities face discrimination, abuse, or social isolation.
– Most have little or no access to therapy, rehabilitation, or inclusive care.

These numbers are more than statistics—they are real children, many of them with untapped gifts, dreams, and potential. But without access to supportive environments, their voices are never heard, and their lives are often written off.

The Barriers They Face

Children with disabilities in Nigeria often encounter:
– Inaccessible schools
– Stigma and harmful cultural beliefs
– No therapy or support services
– Neglected policies and weak implementation

For many families, the burden becomes too much. Some are forced to abandon their child’s education or care altogether due to poverty, shame, or burnout.

A New Vision: Oak Centre Prime

In response to this heartbreaking gap, Oakonsult is building Oak Centre Prime—a purpose-built facility designed to transform the lives of children with disabilities in Nigeria.

Located in Oolo Town, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Oak Centre Prime will:
– Accommodate over 250 children and young people with disabilities
– Offer education, therapy, and vocational training in one place
– Provide family support and counselling
– Champion a holistic model: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being

This is not just a building. It’s a movement to rewrite the story of disability in Nigeria.
