ABOUT US
OUR STORY
In April 2010, medical mismanagement in Nigeria, Africa, led to our then 18-month-old daughter’s brain damage. We were just six years in marriage at the time, and this incident became a life-changing event for us all, affecting every sphere of our lives as a very young family unit. Eventually, we had to relocate to the UK with our three daughters ages 5, 3 and 18 months, in search of appropriate and effective medical intervention for Oluwatoyitan.
The complexities of our daughter’s medical situation became clearer through the years as she was diagnosed with Global Developmental Delay, presumed viral meningoencephalitis, Cerebral Palsy (GMFCS Level 5), Scoliosis, Epilepsy, Hip Dislocation, Chest infections, and Sleep Apnoea. All these and other diagnoses mean Oluwatoyitan is a wheelchair user, non-verbal, dependent on oxygen support 24/7, feed through a peg in her tummy, doubly incontinent, lives on partially functioning lungs and is fully dependent on an adult for all her care needs. Even in the face of excellent medical facilities and expertise in the UK, we were told that Oluwatoyitan (Abigail, as often called) would not make it to double digits, and she was moved to palliative (end-of-life) care in 2014
Oluwatoyitan has survived ten major close-to-death chest infections requiring life-support interventions, including COVID-19, among many other associated issues! She has come thus far by living out the meaning of her name, which means ‘can God be this great?’.
My husband and I were Christians before we got married, and our commitment to the work of the kingdom has been unwavering. As may be imagined, I had many questions to ask the Lord when we came face to face with the giant called DISABILITY, and it has been quite a journey since 2010. The joy in all remains that this battle drew me closer to the foot of the cross, and though the Lord is yet to answer my ‘why’ questions, He has responded by giving me a PURPOSE in it all. John 10:10 became one of the stones in facing this giant and claiming an abundant life despite the precarious terrain we found ourselves in. Everything has, therefore, funnelled into the channel, leading to the birth of OAKONSULT DISABILITIES OUTREACH (OAKonsult).
